What We Do

Bringing Rights To LIfe

“HRAC Ghana’s work centres on three primary areas: research, advocacy, and the provision of free legal services”

HRAC’s work centres on three primary areas: research, advocacy, and the provision of free legal services. As part of its efforts to contribute to the development of the human rights landscape in Ghana, the organisation focuses on the vulnerable and marginalised members of society, including persons with disabilities, individuals from minority groups, refugees, women, and children. Since its inception, HRAC has provided human rights services in thematic areas such as access to healthcare (sexual and reproductive health rights, protection of human rights for persons living with HIV, and key populations); access to justice through the provision of pro bono legal services and public interest litigation; democratic policing monitoring and advocacy; prison advocacy aimed at protecting the rights of prisoners; monitoring compliance with international human rights standards; and educating the public while raising awareness of human rights. From its humble beginnings, HRAC has grown into a respected human rights organisation, both locally and internationally.

Research

The Human Rights Advocacy Centre (HRAC) is a not-for-profit, independent, non-partisan research and advocacy organisation established to advance and protect human rights in Ghana. Located in Accra, the capital of Ghana, since 2008, the organisation has become a household name throughout the country due to the extensive reach of its services. The HRAC was founded by Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, who is a passionate advocate for human rights. She conceived the vision to establish the organisation during her tenure as the Head of the African regional branch of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI).
